Dimensional weight: formula, divisors and chargeable weight
A practical guide to DIM weight for parcels and air freight, with worked examples and carrier checks.
Why a light box can be expensive
Transport capacity is limited by both weight and space. A large carton filled with a light product may reach the aircraft or van's volume limit long before its weight limit. Dimensional weight converts that occupied space into a comparable billing weight.
The carrier normally compares actual scale weight with dimensional weight and charges the greater value. This is why reducing an outer carton by only a few centimeters can materially change a quote across a large shipment.
Formula and divisor
For metric measurements, multiply packed length, width and height in centimeters, then divide by the service divisor. A 60 × 40 × 35 cm carton is 84,000 cm³. With divisor 5,000 its DIM weight is 16.8 kg; with 6,000 it is 14 kg.
The divisor is not universal. It can differ by carrier, service, route and contract. Use the value in the current tariff rather than assuming that a familiar divisor applies.
- Measure the outermost packed dimensions, including bulges and protection.
- Apply the carrier's dimension and weight rounding rules.
- Compare actual and DIM weight for each handling unit when required.
Worked shipment example
Suppose ten cartons measure 60 × 40 × 35 cm and weigh 12 kg each. With divisor 5,000, each carton has 16.8 kg DIM weight. Chargeable weight is therefore 168 kg, not the 120 kg shown on the scale.
If the cartons are redesigned to 55 × 38 × 32 cm, DIM weight falls to 13.38 kg each. The same ten cartons would be billed at about 133.8 kg before carrier rounding—a useful packaging saving to test before production.
Common mistakes
Do not use product dimensions, net product weight or an average carton if the shipment contains different sizes. Also avoid comparing total actual weight with total dimensional weight when the carrier assesses each piece separately; that can hide chargeable weight in a mixed shipment.
- Confirm whether oversize and handling surcharges apply separately.
- Keep a record of the quoted divisor and rounding method.
- Recalculate after any packaging change, not only after a weight change.
