Cubic meters, feet, yards and liters explained

A cubic unit has three dimensions

A meter, foot or yard measures length; a cubic meter, cubic foot or cubic yard measures volume. Because length is cubed, a linear conversion factor must also be cubed. One cubic yard is about 0.7646 m³, not 0.9144 m³.

Calculate before converting

Use one consistent length unit for every dimension. A 2 m × 1.5 m × 0.8 m rectangular space is 2.4 m³. The same volume is about 84.76 ft³, 3.14 yd³ or exactly 2,400 liters.

For a cylinder, multiply π by radius squared and height. Use internal dimensions for capacity and external dimensions for occupied shipping space.

Irregular shapes

Break an irregular project into rectangles and cylinders, calculate each piece and add them. Subtract voids only when their dimensions are known and material truly will not occupy them. For sloped excavations or complex stockpiles, a survey or specialized method may be more appropriate.

Quick verification

Write the unit beside every input and result. If a dimension is in centimeters, convert it before multiplying with meters. Sanity-check the answer: a one-meter cube must equal 1 m³ and 1,000 liters.
